The Ford Mustang GT3 returns to Le Mans with a 4th place in qualifying!

The legendary American pony car is back on the Sarthe circuit to challenge the supercars from Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche. The Porton Competition team has entered a trio of Mustang GT3s in the world's most famous endurance race, with the ambition of securing Ford's first class victory since 2016.

A historic return for the Mustang

This is only the third time in history that the Ford Mustang has participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After its first appearances in 1967 and 1997, the muscle car is back in force this year with three examples entered in the GT3 category.

The cars numbered 77, 88 and 44 are prepared by the Proton Competition team, which already races two Mustang GT3s in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). They will notably be driven by Ryan Hardwick, Ben Baker, Zacharie Robichon, Giorgio Roda, Dennis Olsen, Mikkel O. Pedesen, Christopher Mies, John Hartshorne and Ben Tuck.

A promising 4th place in qualifying

During the qualifying sessions, the Mustangs demonstrated great potential. The No. 77 set the 4th fastest time in the GT3 category during the Hyperpole, suggesting a competitive race against strong competition from Aston Martin, BMW, Chevrolet, Ferrari, Lexus, Lamborghini, McLaren and Porsche.

For Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, this return to Le Mans is an opportunity to reconnect with the rich history of the brand in Sarthe:

โ€œThe Ford Mustang has been racing on racetracks around the world for decades, and itโ€™s time for us to take our iconic coupe to the worldโ€™s most important race. Ford has a rich history at Le Mans since the first race in 1923 and we are excited to return to the world stage in what promises to be one of the most exciting races of the modern era. ยป

A 5.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 under the hood

To develop the Mustang GT3, Ford collaborated with Multimatic and M-Sport, its WRC partner. Under the hood, we find a modified 5.4-liter naturally aspirated Coyote V8, mated to a transaxle gearbox. Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels.

The bodywork sports numerous aerodynamic appendages, including an imposing rear wing, to stick to the track and compete with the best GT3s.

The Mustang GTD is also there

On the sidelines of the event, Ford also brought to Le Mans the Mustang GTD, a limited series presented for the first time in Europe. A great spotlight for this exclusive model.

Join us this weekend to follow the performance of the Mustang GT3s on the legendary Sarthe circuit. The objective is clear: bring back victory in the GT3 category, 7 years after the success of the Ford GT in LMGTE Pro. American horses are very responsive!
