Roger Federer sports one of Rolex's coolest sports watches

Earlier this week, at the New York premiere of his new documentary โ€œFederer: Twelve Final Days,โ€ tennis icon and Rolex ambassador Roger Federer sported the Yacht-Master II ref. 226627 โ€“ a watch so light that I feared, when handling it for the first time in Geneva last year, that I would crush it, thereby owing a check for $14,050 (plus tax) to Rolex headquarters.

A revolutionary titanium watch

The ref. 226627 wasn't Rolex's first titanium watch โ€“ that distinction goes to the 50mm Deepsea Challenge, which was apparently designed for James Cameron to wear while exploring the depths of the Atlantic in search of shipwrecks of liners. The Yacht-Master II, on the other hand, is arguably more exciting: measuring 42mm in diameter, it was first seen on the wrist of skipper (and fellow Rolex ambassador) Sir Ben Aislney in fall 2021. It This is more of a prototype but a full-fledged production model, made from RLX Grade 5 titanium and available for purchase. (In theory, at least.)

The differences with the Submariner

What makes this Submariner-looking watch different from a real Submariner? The two are certainly similar in terms of design, but with a few key differences: there is of course the RXL titanium case, but also the 42mm size (compared to 41mm for the Sub), a bidirectional timing bezel with insert Sandblasted Cerachrom (instead of the Sub's unidirectional dive bezel), date window (only found on Submariner Date models), and matching RLX titanium Oyster bracelet with Oysterlock clasp and Easylink comfort extender . (The Sub does not have a titanium bracelet available.)

A shared movement

Aside from that, both the Submariner Date and Yacht-Master II feature Rolex's Caliber 3235 automatic movement with 70 hours of power reserve, and both are designed for aquatic use. The Sub, however, is a diving watch that is water-resistant to 300 m, while the Yacht-Master II, intended for sailing, is water-resistant to 100 m โ€“ which is still respectable, but is best kept on the deck of a boat. state-of-the-art racing sailboat.

A watch that suits Federer perfectly

Seeing the Yacht-Master II on Federer's wrist is more amusing than notable โ€“ it matched his dark suit at the photocall perfectly, despite being a decidedly sporty piece designed to be used and abused. As a Rolex ambassador, Federer has of course been spotted with almost every notable offering from the brand in recent years, from the Daytona Le Mans to the precious metal Sky-Dweller and more. (The man wears a 1908 dressed up beautifully with a tuxedo, but let's be real โ€“ this is a brand known for its sports watches, and we're talking about one of the world's most renowned athletes.) After takes a tour of the brand's most fascinating models, the only relevant question remaining is: how to get Federer to wear a Daytona โ€œLeopardโ€?
