Buying a watch as a gift: What would you choose?

Selecting a timepiece for someone special makes the process of purchasing a watch for yourself as easy as a walk in the park.

Buying a watch for yourself, often a difficult decision

Buying a watch for yourself is often an important decision and one that is not necessarily made quickly. I don't know about you, but I've often agonized over a purchase. I read reviews, searched for people's thoughts on a watch through forums, and did about as much reading as I could without becoming obsessive. Buying a watch as a gift, however, can seem so much more difficult.

Rolex and Cartier, timeless classics

Traditionally, buying a watch as a gift often came down to choosing a sporty or dressy timepiece. When I first thought about buying my girlfriend a watch, I thought of two brands: Rolex and Cartier. There was something about the refined elegance of a Cartier Tank or the subtle, sporty lines of a Rolex Oyster that appealed to me.

Find the watch that reflects your loved oneโ€™s personality

Rather than buying watches for our loved ones based on how sporty or dressy they are or how tall they are, I think a more modern idea would be to consider what factors in a watch best express them. As watch enthusiasts, we are interested in watchmakers and watches that perhaps reflect a certain mood, an idea of โ€‹โ€‹what we might want to be, or a specification that we are looking for. In short, we seek out or are drawn to designs that we connect with in some way.

A Longines Heritage Conquest for my partner

After some reflection, I determined that one of my favorite things about my partner was her sense of curiosity. A science communicator, she reminds me of the intrepid scientists of the early 20th century, as she is on a path to inform, educate and study. Although glamorous, she is also a very down to earth and practical person, so I didn't want the watch to be ostentatious.

The Longines Heritage Conquest, with its timeless and elegant design inspired by the 50s and 60s, a period of pioneering exploration of space and the depths of our oceans, seemed to me to perfectly reflect this spirit. The central medallion on the bottom of the box, representing the ocean and the stars, reminded me of our walks by the sea and our shared love for the ocean.

Choosing a watch as a gift, a deeply personal process

Buying a watch for someone special is not an easy task, at least if you start thinking about it a lot. I hope sharing my journey shows that there is no real road map to buying a watch as a gift for someone. It truly is a deeply personal process. But thatโ€™s why itโ€™s an interesting element of our watchmaking passion.

And you, which watch would you choose to give to a loved one? Feel free to share your suggestions in the comments!
