There are several accessories that I think a (beginner) watch collector could benefit from, but one of the first purchases should be, in my opinion, a good quality magnifying glass. In watchmaking, details matter, and examining them up close will add a whole new level of appreciation and understanding. This allows you to study the finish of a watch dial or movement and take more pleasure in the effort watch makers put into creating them.
Even Modest Watches Deserve a Close Look
It is a common mistake to think that only very high-end watches are worth observing under magnification. While it's true that a Lange or a Greubel Forsey can give you goosebumps when you examine them under a magnifying glass, even a modest Seiko 5 will impress you in its own way. Watch manufacturers have invested significantly in optimizing their production processes, pushing the boundaries every time, and it shows.
More complex designs thanks to advanced production processes
In most market segments, this allows them to pursue more complex designs through advanced production processes. At the top of the industry, skills have also been refined, although they are usually applied manually. The fact is that there is hardly a watch these days that doesn't deserve a closer look under the magnifying glass.
Choosing the right magnifying glass
The question is which magnifying glass to choose. First, there is the magnification factor. Personally, I prefer ten times magnification because it allows me to really delve into the subject and get as close as possible. I wouldn't go any higher, but I have friends and colleagues who prefer a magnification factor of six or eight times. I have always avoided getting one that I attach between my eye socket or that I have to place around my head with a spring. While they have their uses, I'm not a watchmaker, and a simple hand-held model works just fine for me.
A modest investment for increased pleasure
And while you can make it almost as expensive as you want, a decent magnifier can be found for around $20 โ a modest investment that will greatly increase the enjoyment you get from your watch collection.
So, don't hesitate any longer and treat yourself to a magnifying glass to explore the smallest details of your favorite timepieces. You will discover a fascinating world of finishes and know-how, and your passion for watchmaking will only be strengthened!
