Despite the millions lost on sedans, Ford's CEO doesn't seem to care and is considering the possibility of launching a new electric sedan in the future. The American brand could once again offer a sedan, which would be electric thanks to the aerodynamic profile of this type of car.
Sedans now only work with major German premium brands
Sedans have only been available for years from major German premium brands. Many manufacturers have tried their luck in the various sedan segments without success and, in fact, many of those companies that historically offered this type of vehicle no longer include them in their product lines because they are not profitable in terms of sales .
The gaps left by sedans have been filled by the popular SUVs, cars that actually capture the majority of sales in Europe and the United States. However, there are still manufacturers who do not admit defeat with sedans and, despite the millions of euros lost, have decided to bring them back in the near future.
Ford could launch an electric sedan
This is the case with Ford. The blue oval firm has not had a sedan in its model range for some time. In fact, the last one was the Ford Mondeo and it ceased to be sold in our market in 2022, when production for Europe of the model ceased at the Valencian Almussafes factory. The Taurus and Fusion are no longer sold in the United States either.
Despite two years already without representation in the sedan market, Ford CEO Jim Farley left the door open in a recent interview with Matt Farah of 'The Smoking Tire' to the possibility that the company could start selling sedans again. sedans.
โWe didnโt say no one wants to buy sedans,โ Farley said. โSedans are a very popular body type [โฆ]. The reason we don't sell sedans in the United States is very simple: we've lost billions on them and we're no longer in a position to lose billions on vehicles.”
โThe bottom line is that sedans are very aerodynamic,โ the Ford executive continued. โIn a world where batteries are expensive, a super aerodynamic car like a sedan or hatchback is a great silhouette for aerodynamics,โ Farley insinuated regarding the potential of an electric sedan.
Regarding the possibility of Ford launching a new sedan, Farley said, “If we make one, it will probably be very different from the others in terms of feel, look and smell.” We donโt want to make generic vehicles.โ
During the interview, Farah asked the Ford CEO about the possibility of cars like the Ford Fiesta or the Ford Focus sedan returning to the market. โAs we downsize our cars and improve our quality, Ford may have an opportunity to enter these vehicle segments,โ Farley said. โBut most Maverick customers are Civic and Corolla customers, and they like a pickup.โ
This clearly shows that the American brand does not intend, for the moment, to revive compact cars like the Fiesta or the Focus, whose production will cease in the coming months without a generational replacement, and that it will bet on vehicles requested by its buyers, as is the case with the Ford Maverick pickup.
Ford admits to losing millions of euros on this type of car, but doesn't care and says they will bring them back, but with a trick
