4 Rookie Mistakes to Avoid When Buying a Used Car

Don't worry, with a few minutes of reading you will stop committing them. Sometimes, due to lack of knowledge, we (all) make mistakes when buying a used car. The good news is that you will now be more attentive and you will not fall into these traps.

Do not request a test drive

Driving the car, even if just for a few minutes, is the best way to detect certain problems, especially those related to the transmission and suspension. Negotiating the purchase of a used vehicle via the Internet and with an individual does not prevent you from agreeing on a test drive with the owner. This will also allow you to experience the driving sensations and see how you cope with the size and technology of the vehicle, which is fundamental when choosing a car.

Make poorly thought out decisions

Are you going to buy a used car because you want to treat yourself or because you need one? Normally, the second option wins, leaving the heart and mind debating which model to choose. Matas Buzelis, automobile expert from carVertical, summarizes the keys to choosing the right model in three points:

  • Budget: the price of your future car should not exceed 35% of your annual income.
  • Fuel type: Electric cars are more expensive to buy but less expensive to maintain. Diesel cars are economical and excellent for long journeys. Gasoline cars are quieter and require less maintenance, but use more fuel.
  • Space: SUVs and shooting brakes are more practical in terms of seats (there are seven seats) and trunk space.
  • Do not ask for car history

Requesting the history of the car you are considering buying from the DGT can avoid unpleasant surprises, such as falsification of mileage. The DGT report contains revealing information such as the date of registration and whether there are any incidents preventing the transaction. Depending on the report chosen, you can also obtain administrative information, identification of the owner, the municipality where the vehicle is domiciled, the history of technical inspections, mileage, number of owners, charges and other data such as technical information or EuroNCAP note.

Do not seek advice from a mechanic

Unless you are an expert, even after a test drive, you may miss some technical issues. This is why it is a good idea to seek help from a mechanic to check that everything is in order. You will have to pay for this, yes, but these inspections are not expensive and can save you inconvenience and expense in the form of repairs after purchase (remember that even private sellers must offer a warranty).
