7 Must-Have Tips for an Unforgettable Summer Driving Vacation

The car remains the preferred means of transport for the French for their summer trips. For many, this is the most economical option, offering greater freedom of movement once at their destination. But using your car for vacation and doing so safely requires a little preparation. Here are some simple recommendations to ensure that peace begins even before departure.

Plan your route in advance

Setting off on a trip without knowing the route well, whether there will be roadworks or how long it will take to get there can be a source of unnecessary stress. Planning your journey in advance, taking into account stops and considering alternatives, has many advantages:

If it's your first time taking this route, you might feel lost and this uncertainty could cause you to miss an exit, adding miles and time to the trip. This will not only put you in a bad mood, but will also cause extra fuel consumption.

As you plot your route, you can note recommended places to take a break or spot the cheapest gas stations. The Waze app can show you the most efficient route, helping you save fuel.

Prepare your vehicle a few days before departure

There is no worse way to start your holiday than with a breakdown. Some are unavoidable, but others are the result of improper vehicle maintenance.

To avoid arriving at your destination with your car on a tow truck and directly to the garage, you must check that the key elements are in good condition: tires, filters, oil, fluid levels, windshield wipers. A visit to your mechanic for a complete check can be wise before a long journey.

Distribute the load well and do not overload your vehicle

Who has never had problems loading all their luggage into the car or felt like they were taking too much?

Although we don't often give it the importance it deserves, overloading the vehicle is not recommended. For several reasons: it increases consumption, modifies driving behavior (you need more distance to brake, for example), intensifies the wear of brakes, tires and shock absorbers.

It is especially important to remember that all luggage must be placed in the trunk or in additional legal spaces. Carrying unsecured objects in the passenger compartment is very dangerous in the event of an accident and can be grounds for a fine.

Avoid driving during hours of high heat

Heat is the enemy of drivers because it increases the feeling of fatigue and drowsiness. Studies show that driving in hot weather can be as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This is why Road Safety advises avoiding driving during the hottest hours (between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.). It is also not recommended to drive at dusk as the risk of glare increases.

Another important tip is to stay well hydrated throughout the journey, wear loose, breathable clothing, and stop to rest every two hours or 200 km.

Protect all vehicle occupants

The driver must always wear a seat belt, as must the other occupants of the vehicle. If children under 135 cm are traveling, they must be seated in the rear seats, unless they are all occupied by other children, and always with a child restraint system (CRS) adapted to their age and to their size.

It is equally important to ensure that pets travel properly restrained, for their safety and that of passengers.

Exercise extra caution throughout the journey

A study by Road Prevention reveals that summer is the most dangerous time to travel by car, with an increase in accidents (largely due to increased travel).

Most road accidents during the summer period occur on secondary roads and near the destination. Drivers relax knowing that they are close to their destination and, at the same time, accumulate fatigue from the kilometers traveled, which reduces their concentration and increases distractions. As the arrival approaches, haste also sets in, leading to speeding.

Think about insurance and necessary documents

Before hitting the road, make sure you have all the necessary documents: driving license, registration document, insurance certificate. Also check the validity of your car insurance and consider the option of roadside assistance if you don't have one.

If you are traveling abroad, find out about the traffic rules specific to the country you are traveling to. Some countries require special equipment such as a breathalyzer or a reflective vest.

Preparing for your road trip takes a little time and organization, but these efforts will be greatly rewarded by the peace of mind and security they will bring to your trip. By following these tips, you put all the chances on your side to fully enjoy your vacation from the moment you leave home. Have a good trip and happy holidays on the roads of France and Europe!
