Hyundai has just made history at the famous Pikes Peak hill climb by setting a new record in the modified electric SUV and crossover category. This exceptional performance, achieved with a special version of the Ioniq 5 N, demonstrates the impressive potential of electric vehicles in the most demanding motor racing events.
A feat signed by Dani Sordo
It was Spanish driver Dani Sordo, an iconic figure in the World Rally Championship, who wrote his name into the Pikes Peak history books. Driving a specially prepared Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, dubbed โTA Specโ (for Time Attack), Sordo climbed the 19.99 kilometres and 156 turns of the course in just 9 minutes, 30 seconds and 852 thousandths.
This exceptional performance not only allowed it to win its category, but also to set a new record for modified electric SUVs and crossovers on this legendary track. This impressive time testifies to the effectiveness of the preparation carried out by Hyundai engineers and the undeniable talent of Dani Sordo.
A supercharged Ioniq 5 N
To achieve this feat, Hyundai has developed a specific version of its Ioniq 5 N, called TA Spec. This extreme version of the electric crossover has seen its power increased to 677 horsepower, an increase of 36 horsepower compared to the production model. This development was achieved solely by a modification of the rear engine management software, demonstrating the still untapped potential of Hyundai's electric platform.
Beyond this increase in power, the TA Spec benefits from a specific aerodynamic package, designed to generate maximum downforce in the rarefied air of the high altitudes of Pikes Peak. The vehicle also received reinforced shock absorbers and brakes, as well as Yokohama ADVAN 005 slick tires, perfectly suited to the extreme conditions of the race.
An electric symphony
One of the most intriguing features of this Ioniq 5 N TA Spec is its sound generation system. Hyundai has in fact taken the concept to the extreme by equipping the vehicle with a device capable of producing a sound exceeding 120 decibels. This unique feature serves two essential functions:
This innovative approach demonstrates Hyundai's desire to rethink the sporty driving experience in the age of electrification, by combining performance and sensations.
A team performance
Dani Sordo's feat is not isolated. A second example of the Ioniq 5 N TA Spec, piloted by the talented Randy Pobst, also achieved a remarkable performance, completing the climb in 9 minutes, 55 seconds and 551 thousandths. This double underlines the reliability and consistency of the vehicles prepared by Hyundai.
The production version also shines
Hyundai didnโt limit its participation at Pikes Peak to modified vehicles only. A stock Ioniq 5 N, equipped with only the mandatory safety modifications, also took part in the event. Driven by Ron Zaras, a former member of the Hoonigan team, this standard version crossed the finish line in 10 minutes, 49 seconds and 267 thousandths.
This performance is all the more remarkable as it is the first time recorded for a production SUV at Pikes Peak. Zaras' time is only a few seconds away from the absolute record for production SUVs, held since 2018 by Rhys Millen at the wheel of a Bentley Bentayga (10:48.902).
The specific challenges of electric at altitude
Unlike combustion engine vehicles, electric cars are less affected by the thinner air at altitude. This advantage allows them to maintain peak performance throughout the climb. However, the Pikes Peak race presents a unique challenge for electric vehicles: battery thermal management.
The rapid and continuous ascent places a heavy strain on the batteries, which must provide a large amount of energy in a short period of time. This intense stress can cause the batteries to overheat, compromising the vehicleโs performance and safety. Hyundaiโs success in these extreme conditions is a testament to the effectiveness of its thermal management system and the robustness of its electrical technology.
The future of motor racing
The Ioniq 5 Nโs exceptional performance at Pikes Peak is part of a broader trend towards the electrification of motorsport. It is worth remembering that the absolute record for the event is currently held by an electric vehicle: the Volkswagen ID.R, which set a staggering time of 7 minutes, 57 seconds and 148 thousandths in 2018.
This year again, electric cars shone with the overall victory of Romain Dumas at the wheel of the Ford F-150 Lightning SuperTruck, a 1,600 horsepower electric prototype. Despite an unplanned stop during the climb, Dumas set a time of 8 minutes, 53 seconds and 533 thousandths, demonstrating once again the potential of electric motors in the extreme conditions of Pikes Peak.
Hyundai's feat with the Ioniq 5 N at Pikes Peak marks a turning point in the history of motor racing. It proves that electric vehicles, far from being confined to urban use, are capable of exceptional performance in the most demanding conditions. This success opens the way to a new era of motor racing, where technological innovation and performance combine with respect for the environment.
