Volkswagen has just unveiled an exceptional collection of historic Golf GTIs at its Osnabrรผck plant in Germany. To mark the Golf's 50th anniversary, the manufacturer has unveiled unique models, bold concepts and legendary racing cars that trace the fascinating history of this automotive icon. Dive into the heart of this ephemeral museum that will thrill all fans of the brand.

Half a century of GTI passion

The Golf GTI holds a special place in the hearts of sports car enthusiasts. Since its launch in 1976, this supercharged compact has won over a loyal following thanks to its perfect balance of performance and practicality. To celebrate 50 years of the Golf, Volkswagen has assembled a unique collection of rare and historic models at its Osnabrรผck plant.

This exceptional exhibition traces the evolution of the Golf GTI through its eight generations. From the first models in 1976 to the latest version, we discover how this automotive icon has constantly reinvented itself while retaining its very particular DNA. Each generation bears witness to the technological advances of its time, whether in terms of engine, chassis or equipment.

Hidden gems finally revealed

Among the treasures on display is the extremely rare Golf GTI G60 Limited. Produced in just 71 units in 1989, this supercharged version developed 210 horsepower thanks to a G-Lader compressor. Its โ€œDesigned by Volkswagen Motorsportโ€ badge made it a highly sought-after collectorโ€™s item even at the time.

Another rare gem is the Golf MKVI โ€œV6 Turboโ€ developed in collaboration with Rothe Motorsport. This experimental prototype grafted a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine into a sixth-generation Golf, for a phenomenal 444 horsepower. Unfortunately, this project never resulted in a production version due to homologation reasons.

The queens of the competition

The exhibition also showcases the Golf GTIs that have shone in competition. It includes the legendary Golf Pikes Peak, a twin-engine monster designed for the famous American hill climb. Its driver Klaus-Joachim “Jochi” Kleint was also present to detail the technical specifications of this extraordinary car.

Another star of the line-up is the third-generation Golf Rallye A59. With its widened body and refined aerodynamics, this prototype prefigured the future Golf Rs. Its spectacular appearance makes it one of the most impressive models on display.

Concepts that shaped the future

Volkswagen is also using the event to exhibit several concept cars based on the Golf GTI. These style studies, often presented at the GTI gathering in Wรถrthersee, Austria, have inspired the design of future generations of Golf.

We thus discover the 2013 Design Vision GTI, a radical styling exercise equipped with a 500 horsepower twin-turbo V6. The Golf GTI Roadster, created in collaboration with Sony for the game Gran Turismo 6, pushes the boundaries of design even further with its futuristic barquette silhouette.

The future seen by the younger generation

The exhibition also gives pride of place to the projects of Volkswagen apprentices. Every year, young designers and engineers in training at VW are given carte blanche to imagine their vision of the ideal Golf GTI. The result is bold creations such as the GTI Dark Shine with its 390 horsepower or the GTI First Decade with its innovative hybrid drive system.

These projects allow Volkswagen to stay in tune with the expectations of young drivers while exploring new technological avenues. They demonstrate the manufacturer's desire to develop the Golf GTI while preserving its original spirit.

A legacy looking to the future

This exceptional exhibition demonstrates how the Golf GTI has remained true to its DNA while evolving over the decades. From the first 110 horsepower model to the current versions exceeding 300 horsepower, the recipe for success has remained the same: high performance in a compact and versatile format.

With the recent launch of the eighth-generation Golf R, Volkswagen proves that the GTI saga still has a bright future ahead of it. There is no doubt that in 50 years, the brand will once again be able to exhibit a collection as rich and exciting as the one presented in Osnabrรผck.

This dive into the heart of the history of the Golf GTI will delight all fans of the brand. It allows you to measure the considerable impact that this iconic model has had on the automotive industry for half a century. The Golf GTI has managed to cross the ages while remaining true to its values: driving pleasure accessible to the greatest number.
