Huawei rolls out global security update for its smartwatches

Huawei Watch 3 and Watch 3 Pro owners can now enjoy a new security patch. This update, while minor, is a testament to Huaweiโ€™s continued commitment to the security of its wearables.

A security update under HarmonyOS 3

Huawei has just released version 3.0.0.177 of its software for its Watch 3 and Watch 3 Pro smartwatches. This update, which comes shortly after version 3.0.0.174 focused on improving system stability, is a global security patch.

It is important to note that this update is still part of HarmonyOS 3. HarmonyOS version 4.0 remains in closed beta testing for the time being, reserved for a limited number of users.

Rapid and extensive deployment

Update 3.0.0.177 appears to have reached a large number of users in a short time, suggesting that we are close to the end of the phased rollout. Huawei Watch 3 and Watch 3 Pro owners can check the update's availability via the Huawei Health app.

Huawei recommends that users ensure they have the latest version of the Huawei Health app before starting the installation. The company also warns that the process may take several hours.

Security improvements not detailed

As is often the case with security updates, Huawei does not provide specific details on the improvements made. The release notes simply state that this is the May 2024 update, although it was rolled out in June.

This 263MB update could fix recently discovered security vulnerabilities or strengthen the overall protection of devices against possible threats.

Waiting for HarmonyOS 4.0

While this security update is welcome, many users are eagerly awaiting the public rollout of HarmonyOS 4.0 for the Huawei Watch 3 and Watch 3 Pro. Huawei has not yet announced a specific date for this major update.

The arrival of this security patch demonstrates Huaweiโ€™s continued commitment to the security and stability of its devices, even on older models. This is a positive for users who can continue to use their smartwatches with confidence, while waiting for new features to arrive with HarmonyOS 4.0.
