Smartwatches Move Up a Gear with GPT-4o

Thanks to the Zepp OS 4 update, Amazfit smartwatches now integrate the Flow virtual assistant based on OpenAI's GPT-4o model. A major development that promises to significantly improve the voice interaction and functionality of the brand's smartwatches.

A game-changing update

Amazfit has just announced the deployment of Zepp OS 4, a major update to its smartwatch operating system. The main new feature is the integration of GPT-4o, the latest multimodal and multilingual artificial intelligence model developed by OpenAI, at the heart of the Flow virtual assistant.

This development promises a more natural and efficient voice interaction with Amazfit smartwatches. The Flow assistant will now be able to respond vocally to the user, initially in English or German. Support for other languages โ€‹โ€‹such as French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish is planned at a later date.

Extended features

With the integration of GPT-4o, the Flow assistant gains in versatility. Among the new possibilities offered to users:

  • Initiate hands-free Bluetooth calls
  • Reply to WhatsApp messages by voice command (Android only for now)
  • Control some compatible connected devices (Sonos speakers, DJI action cameras) via dedicated mini-apps
  • The update also brings a new Night Display mode, reminiscent of that of the Apple Watch Ultra.

    Compatible models at all prices

Zepp OS 4 is currently available for Amazfit smartwatches that already have version 3.5 of the operating system. This includes both affordable models like the Cheetah, Balance and Active (available from โ‚ฌ130 on Amazon) and high-end models like the Falcon and T-Rex Ultra.

    A gradual deployment

The rollout of Zepp OS 4 will begin in July 2024. Amazfit has not communicated a precise timetable for the arrival of the various features, in particular concerning the support of additional languages โ€‹โ€‹for the Flow voice assistant.

This major update positions Amazfit as an innovative player in the smartwatch market. The integration of GPT-4o could well be a strong argument against the competition, particularly Apple and Samsung. It remains to be seen how these new features will behave on a daily basis and whether they will be able to appeal to users.

The rapid evolution of virtual assistants and artificial intelligence suggests that more exciting innovations in wearables will be coming in the months and years to come. Amazfit seems set to play a leading role in this technological revolution.
