Just days before its official presentation, new information about Samsung's Galaxy Ring is surfacing. The connected ring could well integrate a health feature as important as it is embarrassing: snoring detection.
A complete sleep tracker
According to a report from Android Authority, the Galaxy Ring would be able to detect snoring and heavy breathing during sleep. This feature, already present on some of the brand's smartwatches, could make perfect sense on a ring, more comfortable to wear at night.
While snoring may seem harmless, scientific studies have shown that chronic snoring can be linked to heart problems, so this feature could prove valuable for long-term health monitoring.
Data accessible via the Samsung Health app
As with the Galaxy Watch, users will need to view the data collected via the Samsung Health app on their smartphone. Since the ring itself does not have a screen, it will only serve as a sensor.
The app will likely require the use of the phone's microphone to record nighttime sounds, in order to get more accurate results.
Other health features on the agenda
Analysis of the Samsung Health app code reveals that the Galaxy Ring could also integrate other health tracking functions:
These features, if confirmed, would place the Galaxy Ring as a serious competitor to the smart rings already on the market, including the Oura Ring.
An imminent launch
The official presentation of the Galaxy Ring is expected at the Galaxy Unpacked event to be held in Paris on July 10. Rumors suggest a launch price of between $300 and $350.
Samsung's arrival in the smart ring market marks a major turning point. This is the first time that one of the “Big Three” (Apple, Samsung, Google) has launched into this segment, which could considerably boost this still young market.
Competition that remains calm
Faced with the arrival of this new heavyweight competitor, Oura, one of the current market leaders, is confident. Jason Russell, VP Consumer Software at Oura, said:
โWe have been around for over a decade and during that time we have invested heavily in research and development to improve the accuracy of our algorithms and introduce innovative new features.โ
Samsung's Galaxy Ring looks set to be a promising product that could shake up the wearables market. By integrating advanced health features into a discreet and comfortable format, it could appeal to a wide audience, beyond just tech lovers. Join us on July 10 to discover all the details of this new connected jewel.
