AI missing at launch, but new health features on the horizon

As Apple prepares to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its flagship smartwatch in 2024, the next generation may miss out on the AI โ€‹โ€‹shift. However, promising new health features are on the horizon.

The Apple Watch X: An anniversary name without a revolution

To mark its 10th anniversary, the Apple Watch Series 10 could abandon the usual nomenclature in favor of a more symbolic name: “Apple Watch X.” But unlike the iPhone X in 2017, this name change would not be accompanied by a major technological revolution.

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman:

  • The Watch X would not be equipped with on-board AI, unlike the next iPhone, iPad and Mac
  • It would nevertheless use the same chip as the Apple Watch Ultra 3
  • A larger screen, inspired by the Ultra, could be offered on certain models
  • Blood pressure monitoring: A mixed progress

One of the major new features of the Apple Watch Series 10 could be blood pressure measurement. However, this feature would have some limitations:

  • No continuous voltage monitoring
  • Reliability issues for this first generation
  • A function probably limited to trend detection, rather than precise measurements
  • AI on Apple Watch: A gradual integration

While artificial intelligence won't be present from the launch of the Watch X, that doesn't mean that Apple is abandoning this avenue for its smartwatches:

  • AI integration could be done gradually via software updates
  • Size and battery life constraints probably explain this delay compared to other Apple devices.
  • Smartwatch-specific AI features could be developed in the future
  • A smooth evolution for the Apple Watch

Despite the lack of a technological revolution, the Apple Watch Series 10 should continue to evolve:

  • Improvements to health and fitness tracking features
  • Optimization of autonomy
  • Refined design, potentially inspired by the Apple Watch Ultra
  • The Apple Watch Series 10 (or Watch X) is shaping up to be a gentle evolution rather than a revolution. While the lack of AI at launch may disappoint some, the new health features, including blood pressure monitoring, could appeal to many users. Apple seems to be taking a gradual approach, ensuring the reliability and relevance of its innovations before integrating them into its flagship smartwatch.
