the duel of compact petrol SUVs

In the affordable urban SUV category with petrol engines, the Opel Mokka 1.2 Turbo with 136 hp faces off against the Volkswagen T-Cross 1.0 TSI with 116 hp. Let's find out which of these two versatile models comes out on top in terms of practicality, performance and comfort.

Design and habitability: the T-Cross takes the lead

Although the Opel Mokka is slightly longer and wider, it is the Volkswagen T-Cross that offers the most interior space.

The T-Cross stands out for its superior habitability, especially in the rear seats. Access to the rear seat is also easier thanks to a higher roofline. The Volkswagen's larger seats also ensure greater comfort on long journeys.

In terms of the trunk, the advantage still goes to the T-Cross with a volume ranging from 385 to 1,281 liters, compared to 350 to 1,105 liters for the Mokka. However, the Opel compensates with a higher payload and towing capacity.

Equipment and technologies: a close match

The Volkswagen T-Cross tested was equipped with the Navigation Discover Pro multimedia system, offering high-performance navigation and effective voice control. The downside remains the improvable ergonomics of the touch controls.

The Opel Mokka, for its part, relies on smartphone compatibility for navigation, without offering a proprietary system. The absence of voice control for multimedia functions can be regretted.

Engines: power versus economy

The T-Cross is powered by a three-cylinder 1.0 TSI with 116 hp and 200 Nm. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds for a top speed of 193 km/h.

The Opel Mokka has a more powerful engine: a 1.2 Turbo with 136 hp and 230 Nm. The performance is logically superior with 0 to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 204 km/h.

Despite this difference in power, the average consumption recorded during the test is identical for both vehicles: 6.6 l/100 km.

Road behavior: each has its advantages

The Opel Mokka is distinguished by a sportier character. Its agility in corners and its more biting braking make it a more dynamic vehicle.

The Volkswagen T-Cross prioritizes comfort with better filtering suspensions and a lower perceived noise level.

Both SUVs nevertheless display safe and stable behavior, without any particular weaknesses.

Verdict: T-Cross wins by a narrow margin

Despite the undeniable qualities of the Opel Mokka, particularly in terms of performance and driving pleasure, it is the Volkswagen T-Cross that wins this duel.

The T-Cross stands out thanks to its superior versatility. Its generous habitability, suspension comfort and modern connectivity make it a more relevant choice for varied daily use.

The Opel Mokka, however, has nothing to be ashamed of. It will appeal to drivers who value dynamism and appreciate its distinctive design.

This comparison illustrates the wealth of offerings in the gasoline urban SUV segment. Each manufacturer offers its vision of the ideal vehicle, allowing customers to find the model that best meets their expectations and driving style.
