German automaker Porsche is making a big splash in the premium electric SUV segment with the unveiling of two new models in its popular Macan series. This bold expansion of the all-electric lineup promises to redefine the performance and range standards in the world of zero-emission vehicles.
A surprising entry-level propulsion
The new Macan rear-wheel drive is positioned as the entry-level model in the electric series. Equipped with an electric motor on the rear axle developing 250 kW (340 hp), this sporty SUV focuses on efficiency and range. Thanks to its 100 kWh high-voltage battery, it has an impressive WLTP range of up to 644 kilometres in the combined cycle.
This rear-wheel drive version stands out for its reduced weight of 110 kg compared to the Macan 4, thus contributing to its remarkable energy efficiency. Despite its “eco-responsible” orientation, this model maintains performances worthy of the brand with a torque of 562 Nm allowing it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds.
The Macan 4S: the perfect combination of sportiness and versatility
To bridge the gap between the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo, Porsche is introducing the Macan 4S. This model features Porsche Traction Management (ePTM) technology and a powerful 600-amp SiC pulse inverter. The result is spectacular: a system output of 330 kW (448 hp), which can be increased to 380 kW (516 hp) in overboost mode.
The Macan 4S's performance lives up to expectations: 4.1 seconds for 0 to 100 km/h and an electronically limited top speed of 241 km/h. The range is not to be outdone with up to 595 kilometers in the combined WLTP cycle. As standard, this model benefits from Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), adaptive air suspension and a rear-axle steering system, ensuring an optimal balance between performance and comfort.
A technological revolution under the hood
The new electric Macan incorporates major technological innovations. The 100 kWh lithium-ion battery uses high-nickel chemistry, reducing the proportion of cobalt. This approach increases energy density while minimizing environmental impact.
The batteryโs thermal management system has been completely redesigned. It now enables ultra-fast preheating, optimising charging performance even in cold weather. At a fast-charging station, the Macan can recover up to 100 km of range in just 4 minutes.
An evolutionary design faithful to Porsche DNA
Externally, the new electric Macans retain the range's characteristic silhouette while adopting specific stylistic elements. The front grille, now artificial, integrates active air intakes to optimize aerodynamics. The matrix LED headlights adopt the brand's emblematic four-point light signature.
The rear is distinguished by a prominent roof spoiler and a crossing light strip, emphasizing the width of the vehicle. The aerodynamic wheels, available up to 22 inches, help to reduce drag while affirming the sporty character of the SUV.
A high-tech and luxurious interior
Inside, Porsche is going all-digital with a completely redesigned cockpit. The 12.6-inch curved dashboard is complemented by a 10.9-inch central touchscreen and an optional passenger display of the same size. The user interface, called Porsche Driver Experience, offers extensive customization and intuitive ergonomics.
The materials used reflect Porscheโs commitment to sustainability. The leathers are tanned without chemicals, while many elements are made from recycled materials. The optional electrochromic panoramic roof allows the brightness of the interior to be modulated at the touch of a button.
A complete range for all uses
With the arrival of these two new models, the Macan electric range now covers a wide range of uses. From the rear-wheel drive model that prioritizes range to the super-powerful Macan Turbo and the versatile Macan 4 and 4S, Porsche offers a solution tailored to every user profile.
This extended range strategy allows Porsche to compete directly with established players in the premium electric SUV segment, such as Tesla with its Model Y or BMW with the iX. The Stuttgart brand is relying on its know-how in terms of performance and driving dynamics to stand out in an increasingly competitive market.
The new electric Macan models are already available to order in France, with first deliveries scheduled for the last quarter of 2024. Porsche is thus confirming its ambition to become a major player in high-end electric mobility, while preserving the sporty essence that has made its reputation for more than 70 years.
With this new electric Macan range, the German manufacturer demonstrates its ability to combine sporting heritage and technological innovation, paving the way for a new era of high-performance, environmentally friendly SUVs.
