The Tesla Model Y Juniper is on its way. The American brand is working on the renovation of this electric SUV with an improved propulsion system and increased autonomy.
A model at the top of world sales
In 2023, the Tesla Model Y achieved something few would have imagined: becoming the best-selling car in the world, not just among electrics, but in general. After five years on the market, the Model Y is due for an update, and Tesla is already hard at work on that transformation. Here's everything we know about the Tesla Model Y Juniper.
Elon Musk has insisted that a new Model Y will not be launched this year. However, the reality is that Tesla is testing the next update of the electric SUV, known as Juniper. This model is the last in the range to be renewed after the Model S, Model X and last year the Model 3.
Aesthetic changes and new architecture
Recently, the first images of the Tesla Model Y Juniper were released online via the X Tesla Newswire platform. It shows a rear face with a light bar running across the entire width of the vehicle, bearing the brand name in its center.
In a second image, the interior is revealed with a thin LED strip on the door panels, serving as ambient lighting. A few months earlier, a camouflaged prototype already hinted at the upcoming aesthetic changes, inspired by the Model 3 Highland.
Tesla has taken its time launching the new Model Y, which likely indicates significant changes that require more testing and optimization. It would be disappointing for many if this update were limited to minor improvements to the current model.
Towards a new platform?
According to Autoevolution, the Model Y Juniper could use a new architecture. Tesla has suggested that some new models scheduled for spring 2025 could use elements of the Gen 3 platform, which has been put on hold pending production approval for the robotaxi.
Based on the timelines and prototypes seen, it's very likely that the new Model Y will be one of those models. It's unclear at this point what elements of the Gen 3 will make it into the second-generation Model Y.
Improved power and range
The same media indicates that the Tesla Model Y Juniper will benefit from an improved powertrain in terms of power and autonomy, like the Model 3 Highland.
It could also follow the Model 3 Performance's lead, with more powerful engines, a retuned suspension, increased power and optimized aerodynamics for better performance.
As for the battery, some rumors suggest a capacity of 95 kWh, a 26% increase over the 75 kWh battery of the current Long Range and Performance variants.
This higher battery capacity, combined with better propulsion system efficiency and improved aerodynamics, could enable a range close to 800 kilometers.
However, one should be cautious about this. Although lithium-ion batteries have come a long way in terms of cost and performance, it is difficult to imagine a 26% increase in capacity using the same space.
The Future of Model Y
The Tesla Model Y Juniper represents a significant evolution for this popular model. With aesthetic improvements, a possible new architecture and increased performance, this update could solidify the Model Y's position as the leader in electric SUVs.
Tesla continues to push the boundaries of innovation, seeking to offer ever more capable and attractive electric vehicles to an ever-widening audience. Stay tuned for all the new features that the Model Y Juniper will bring to the Tesla lineup.
