What happens to engine oil after 50 years in its original container?

A YouTuber conducted an experiment to find out what happens to engine oil after half a century in its original container. The results are surprising and highlight the importance of respecting engine oil expiration dates, something that is often overlooked by drivers and mechanics.

The importance of oil changes and oil quality

Oil changes are a crucial maintenance operation for the longevity of a vehicle. Experts recommend:

  • Change the oil every year or two for low mileage drivers.
  • Take into account the mileage traveled since the last oil change
  • Using expired oil can be more damaging than skipping an oil change. Unfortunately, many motorists and mechanics ignore the expiration dates on oil containers, which can lead to costly repairs down the road.

    The Lake Speed โ€‹โ€‹Jr. Experience

Lake Speed โ€‹โ€‹Jr., known on YouTube as “The Motor Oil Geek,” decided to test the effects of expired oil on an engine. His experiment consisted of:

  • Use two sealed oil cans for decades (one plastic and one metal)
  • Shake the cans vigorously before opening.
  • Collect samples for laboratory analysis
  • The results of the analysis

    Laboratory analysis revealed worrying results:

  • The 20-year-old Valvoline oil and the 50-year-old Mobil1 oil showed clear signs of oxidation
  • The original additives (zinc, phosphorus, sulfur) had deteriorated considerably
  • The degraded components could no longer provide effective lubrication of the engine
  • Surprisingly, the oil in the plastic can (Valvoline) was found to be more degraded than that in the older metal can (Mobil1).

The breakdown of oil over time

The experiment highlighted several degradation phenomena:

  • Liquid decomposition
  • Separation of water present in oil
  • Repeated heating and cooling cycles alter the composition
  • These alterations are particularly marked in plastic containers, which are more sensitive to temperature variations.

The real life of engine oil

Contrary to popular belief, engine oil has a limited lifespan, even when not in use:

  • Approximately 5 years when stored sealed in original packaging
  • Beyond this, degradation accelerates, compromising its lubricating properties.
  • Using oil that is too old can cause serious engine damage.
  • The consequences for motorists

This experience highlights the importance of:

  • Always check the expiry date of engine oils before use.
  • Do not store large quantities of oil for long periods of time.
  • Prefer to buy fresh oil for each oil change
  • Ultimately, using expired oil can be a false economy, potentially leading to costly breakdowns. It is therefore essential to raise awareness among motorists and professionals of the importance of respecting the expiry dates of engine oils to ensure the longevity and optimum performance of vehicles.
