Game of the Year: #1 – God of War Ragnarok
The naysayer in all of us would love to sit here and tell you, “Well, awkwardly, Stranger in Paradise: Final Fantasy was the best game of Origin 2022” – it wasn’t, was it? No, that accolade is reserved for God of War Ragnarok, a release so finely polished that you can practically see your own reflection grinning from Kratos’ immaculately rendered stomach. Try it, we dare you!
The Santa Monica studio put so much effort into this sequel that playing through it for the first time was a genuine surprise. Make no mistake, it builds on the same refined blueprints as its predecessor, but there’s just Therefore A lot here. The story goes in directions we didn’t expect, and the gameplay manages to stay fresh for the entire 50-60 hour journey thanks to some smart additions and improvements.
The presentation is excellent across the board, and this extends to the diversity of the performances of an excellent voice cast, all of whom breathe life and personality into their alter egos. The developer carefully navigates the line between serious, serious, and laugh-out-loud funny, with Kratos’ sensitive side and deadpan humor.
The reality is that games like God of War Ragnarok don’t come around very often. It takes an extraordinary amount of money and an even more extraordinary team to pull off a package like this. The side-quests are must-see stuff, the pacing is pitch-perfect, and the bosses live up to the scale and spectacle of past entries in the series. It’s not a perfect game, of course – none are – but it’s as close as you can get.
