Game of the Year: #3 – Horizon Forbidden West
How do you improve one of the better sci-fi stories in recent video game memory? You go off the rails, of course! Dutch developer Guerrilla Games clearly hit Amsterdam’s finest pot shops while plotting Aloy’s sophomore outing in Horizon Forbidden West, because — spoiler alert — the narrative features clones, off-screen ancient monstrosities, and Also A giant planet is cracking the AI. Have we got your attention yet?
Okay, so that’s all stupid, but the PlayStation first-party has also made improvements in the right areas. Side-quests, usually involving contemporary tribes that occupy the land, provide interesting insight into how that Look at the world around you; Whether they worship or fear the machines, it’s really interesting to see how nature shapes the perspectives of different tribes.
It also plays like a high-quality action game, which isn’t all that common for an open world RPG – well, it certainly never was. And it’s all wrapped up in a package that, frankly, looks amazing. With subsequent patches, Guerrilla Games managed to run this sequel in remastered 4K at 60 frames-per-second, and it’s a feast for the eyes. All locales sing, but a special shout-out must go to the sandy shores of San Francisco—honestly, if it weren’t for the deadly, man-eating robots we’d want to go for ourselves.
