Bronze Trophy: Player First Games (Multiverse)

So many new live-service titles seem to crash and burn these days, so much so that a successful one outside of household names feels like an anomaly. Multiverse was one of the few games from Player First Games to become a success, and the studio has continued to support the experience throughout the years. Many balance patches, events and new characters have been implemented into the game, making a good fighting game even better.

Best PS5, PS4 Developer 3

Throughout 2022, Polish heavyweight CD Projekt RED has been working to bring two of its biggest games to the standards we expect on PS5. Cyberpunk 2077 is finally in a playable state after many patches, and then the PS5 version has arrived to make it look and play much better for current-gen users. It then did the same for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, giving it a nice facelift on PS5 and bundling in a bit of free content themed around the Netflix show. Cyberpunk 2077’s lackluster debut will never be forgotten, but CD Projekt RED is working tirelessly to right its wrongs.

Releasing one game is hard enough, so how about two in the space of six months, one of which was even supported post-launch with two pieces of DLC? British team Roll 7 had a fantastic 2022, releasing two of the PS5’s best-feeling titles within striking distance of each other. Ollie World revived the 2D skateboarding series, and then Rollerdrome combined Tony Hawk’s pro skater with guns to great effect. A truly impressive effort from the indie studio.

Platinum Trophy: From Software (Eldon Ring)

The Alden Ring belongs to the same pantheon as the title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild As such it successfully breaks away from the typical mold of open world experiences to set a new standard for exploration. Thanks to FromSoftware, the Japanese team instills surprise and intrigue in every corner and every cave through its incredible commitment to unique visual designs in both the environments and the enemies that inhabit those spaces. The middle ground is varied, beautiful. It could only have been produced by a team as accomplished as FromSoftware, cementing it as one of the industry’s greatest.
