God of War Ragnarok received the first Game of the Year award from Time magazine

As 2022 draws to a close, conversation among gaming enthusiasts is turning to awards season. Who will be crowned Game of the Year? At this stage, we’re willing to split hobbyists between FromSoftware’s beloved Elden Ring and Sony’s excellent sequel, God of War Ragnarok. The latter of these two massive action games just got its first nod for a top 2022 title.

Time magazine has just published its top 10 list, and sitting at number one is Kratos and Atreus’ second outing. It rose above the likes of Horizon Forbidden West, The Quarry, and yes, Alden Ring to secure the victory. Time’s Richard Newby says that Ragnarok “should be the aspiration of all action-adventure games”, praising its storytelling and visuals the most.

This follows FromSoft’s massive RPG receiving a GOTY award at this year’s Golden Joysticks, which is decided by public vote.

Both games have been nominated for Game of the Year at the Game Awards, which are widely considered to be the deciding factor on these things. Those fellow nominees include Horizon Forbidden West, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Stray and Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
