Is a PlayStation Showcase really happening this year?



There is a dedicated PlayStation event as a matter of fact What’s happening before the end of the year? If you’re a devotee of the industry “insider,” you’ll probably answer this question with a resounding yes. But the reality is that Sony has become very difficult to predict, especially when it comes to its consumer-facing actions.

The Japanese giant, of course, has a history of setting up its stall through heavily promoted showcases. In previous years, it relied on events like the ‘PlayStation Experience’ as a way to unveil new hardware and upcoming games. These big shows will be present in addition to the platform holder’s annual E3 press conferences. That’s just not how Sony does things in the PS5 generation, though it’s worth reminding yourself that it is. did Host a PlayStation Showcase last year (on September 9, 2021).

Instead, the company seems happier to drip-feed information to fans through its State of Play presentations — shorter, snappier digital events that still draw impressive viewing numbers, but don’t have the hype of a “proper” performance. That’s not to say there can’t be megaton announcements at State of Play — especially since the last two broadcasts have had plenty of AAA surprises — but if, like us, you’ve felt the hype of an upcoming E3 presser, You’ll know if we’re getting it.

But back on topic: Will there be some kind of PlayStation event in 2022? We are nearing the end of September at the time of writing this article, and those above “inside” have spent months Telling us that a showcase is just around the corner. As you’d expect, the rumors are starting to reach new heights now that we’re heading towards 2023, but Sony has kept its silence on the matter.

It’s worth pointing out that none of the usual social media suspects saw the most recent State of Plays coming. Sony has a good handle on its secrecy these days – at least when it comes to its event schedule – and so you can never really count out a surprise announcement of a showcase.

And, to be fair, there are some things that it can suggests Sony has something up its sleeve. For starters, you’ll bet getting a gameplay deep dive on God of War Ragnarok ahead of its November 9th launch. We also need a release date (and price!) for PSVR2. And on top of that, we’ve been told by the Final Fantasy XVI producer that a new trailer is coming within the next month or so. hmmm.

But see, it’s easy to line things up to meet your speculations. It’s entirely possible (and probably more likely) that Ragnarok will get its own game status. The same may be true for PSVR2. That Final Fantasy XVI trailer could appear in the middle of the night without warning. who knows.
