Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann has opened up about a character in The Last of Us that we have quite a few questions about, namely, Ellie’s mother, Anna. Apparently, we got an entire DLC centered around Anna, but according to Druckmann, plans to include it “fell apart.”
Now it looks like this missing narrative thread will be something that has been addressed. For those sensitive to spoilers of the vaguest kind (specifically, for HBO series) regarding casting, Read at your own risk!
In an interview with diversityDruckmann (along with his co-writer on the HBO adaptation, Craig Mazin) questioned how the show differed from the game after the release of Episode 2.
When asked what element of the show was missing from the game that he was most excited to add, Durkman recalls that “Ellie’s mother, who appeared so late in the season. We already had the game. Wrote a short story after shipping. It was supposed to be an animated short, but it fell apart and didn’t. There was a moment when we almost made it DLC, but it fell apart.”
The chilling twist here, as Durkmann puts it, involves poetry and a sense of complete vertigo. Anna will be played by none other than Ashley Johnson, the actor originally responsible for Ellie’s role in the games.
It will be interesting to see how it all comes together; We have to imagine that the story will be told in some kind of flashback sequence. Are you excited to learn more about Ellie’s origins? Sound off in the comments section below.
