Sony doesn’t seem ready to release a PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro anytime soon, but one hardware refresh that’s reportedly being planned is a detachable disc drive. Tipped to launch in September this year, the idea seems to be that the platform holder will likely drop the PS5 system with disc drive from its lineup and only produce the PS5 Digital Edition. Then, if a customer wants to play physical games, he can buy a removable disk drive separately.
This method will allow Sony to streamline its production process and give potential buyers more flexibility if they want to upgrade in the future. Apparently, you’ll plug it into a PS5 via the USB-C slot and it’ll sit alongside the system, like it was always going to be there. The device is already in the hands of some developers.
It seems to be pitched at new PS5 customers, but we still want to know if you are interested in such an option. If you already have a PS5, would you consider picking one up? If you have yet to buy a console, do you find this solution attractive? Cast your vote in the poll and then expand on your thoughts in the comments below.
