PS5 shipments reach 25 million, but are still far short of the annual target

Sony has confirmed it Q2 FY 2022 Results that it has now shipped 25 million PS5 consoles by September 30, 2022. Shipments covering the last quarter reached 3.3 million, matching the same period in Sony’s previous fiscal year. It shipped a total of 5.7 million consoles this year, but with Sony targeting 18 million shipments by the end of the fiscal year, things will need to pick up considerably in the final two quarters to meet that goal.

Despite shipments falling far short of its projections, Sony still appears confident of hitting its 18 million target by May 2023. It said 6.5 million PS5 consoles were produced during the Q2 quarter.

Elsewhere, combined PS5 and PS4 software sales are down about 14 million from the same period last fiscal year, with 62.5 million units sold to consumers during the latest three-month window. Profits reported by Sony’s Game and Network Services division also fell 49 percent in the quarter, which it attributed to increased game development and studio acquisition costs. Sony completed the purchase of Bungie in the meantime. The division has now cut its annual forecast by 12 percent due to lower-than-expected sales of third-party titles.
