Sony XDEV’s Japan division assists with PS5’s Rise of the Ronin

Sony XDEV was, originally, a Liverpool-based first-party business unit responsible for overseeing first-party projects developed by outside European studios. Past examples include games like Quantic Dreams’ Detroit: Become Human and Sumo Digital’s Sackboy: A Big Adventure. However, we did note last year that the team was hiring for positions in Japan, and that it is now described as a “global” operation.

And we’re seeing evidence of its new remit with the announcement of Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin, which is being published by Sony and overseen by XDEV. “Honored to work with Yasuda-san of Team Ninja Studio on such an exciting title as Rise of the Ronin, [producer] Masaki Yamagiwa, and our Sony XDEV JP team,” wrote veteran Jason Stewart. Twitter.

Until its closure last year, the Japan studio handled all of Sony’s in-house outdoor projects, and was best known for its collaborations with developers like Clap Henz on series such as Everybody’s Golf. The good news is that, instead of leaving the sector entirely, it is now clear that XDEV has moved to fill that space. This ultimately means that we should still expect great PlayStation partnerships to emerge from Japan, as we always have.
