The new PS5 version of The Outer Worlds has some really frustrating performance issues
Officially billed as a ‘remaster’ of the 2019 sci-fi RPG, The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition is out now on PS5. It’s available to buy for slightly less than retail price, or you can pay a small upgrade fee if you already own The Outer Worlds and its two expansions on PS4.
Frankly, we were looking forward to testing it on Sony’s current-gen console. We’re big fans of the original release because of its quirky role-playing options and fun sense of humor, but this PS5 version sadly leaves a lot to be desired.
We’ve already seen similar ideas doing the rounds online, so let us add our own experience to the discussion: Spacer’s Choice Edition does not Plays particularly well on PS5, for some crazy reason. The game of course looks Better than ever, the visuals get a noticeable boost with improved character models and an overhauled lighting system, but the technical performance is clearly underwhelming.
Especially when using the game’s dedicated performance mode, which is supposed to run at a silky 60 frames-per-second (coupled with a dynamic 4K resolution), the frame rate really dips and Likes to dive. Based on what we saw with our own eyes, the frame rate almost never locked itself at 60, constantly fluctuating between 30 and 50fps – or thereabouts. This is not good.
This stable Dips can also affect gameplay. We’ve run into instances where our button presses simply didn’t register – seemingly because the game was skipping too many busy frames. As a result of this, A Rude Stop-start feel, even when you’re casually exploring an environment.
This is a real shame, as some great DualSense support has been added, and, as we mentioned, the game’s updated graphics look great at times. We can only hope that these frame rate issues will be patched sooner rather than later.
