The PS5 accounts for more than half of console sales in the UK this year
Sales of PS5 systems account for more than half of all console purchases in the UK during the first quarter of 2023, GfK data has revealed The Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S both posted percentage losses over the same period in 2022 (down 25% and then 18% respectively) while PS5 sales grew by 180%.
It is well documented how PS5 stock has been in heavy supply for the past six months or so, with the console selling well in Japan and across the US as well. In February, Sony set a new record for unit sales of an individual PlayStation platform in a month. It is estimated that around 500,000 consoles were sold to consumers within the US. In Japan, the PS5 has traded the top spot with the Nintendo Switch for the past six weeks or so.
On the software side, just under eight million games were sold in the first quarter of 2023, representing a one percent increase over the previous year. Hogwarts Legacy is the region’s best-selling game of all time, beating Elden Ring and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga from last year. Breaking the data down to March 2023 only, Resident Evil 4 was the best-selling title of the month, with 65 percent of copies sold on the PS5, PS4.
