The PS5 movement of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is much faster than previous games
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 looks like a tantalizing upgrade on its predecessor, though developer Insomniac Games still has wrinkles to iron out. Everlasting ElAnalistaDeBits Marvel’s Spider-Man and Stopgap put the sequel through its paces, featuring graphical improvements over successor Miles Morales.
The main thing that stood out to us – and was evident during the demo – is that while the speed of traversal has increased massively, Miles also has some new abilities that enable him to pick up much faster speeds than before. Apparently he has a wing suit this time too, so it looks like navigating through New York City will be faster this time around.
Of course, this comes with a caveat, as there is much more pop-in than previous games. Obviously this build is incomplete, so the developer still has time to iron out any kinks, but this is a result of a faster overall pace. There also seem to be some downgrades in terms of reflections and certain details, but there is still time to fix these.
Overall, though, there are a number of subtle improvements. The wind now affects the leaves, and the webs also come with their shadows. Indoor environments have a huge upgrade in lighting, and of course a lot of the demo takes place in Queens, which was an area completely absent from the original game, so expect a much larger open world to explore.
Insomniac Games is one of the best developers around, so we’re quietly confident that it’s going to iron out any kinks and all these improvements are going to be released later in the year. For us, the most important thing is that the gameplay looks denser and more varied than its already excellent predecessors: there are a very much New abilities on display here, and it’s going to make for a much more dynamic experience.
