Train Sim World 3 and its various predecessors are deeply realistic simulators, with a scathing eye for detail when it comes to railway machinery. The Holiday Express release is unexpected, then: it provides a festive route into a 1980s-themed living room, complete with Famicom on the floor and a classic CRT television.
Indeed, instead of navigating the dreaded stretch of track between Gravely Hill and Erdington, you’ll be traveling from fireplace to sofa – in a miniature toy train! “[The add-on] Players watch as the driver of a miniature train shrinks in size, threading its way between living room spaces bathed in the warm glow of a fire,” reads the press release.
But there’s more to this expansion than meets the eye: “Players will have to hunt down a mischievous elf, wreaking havoc in the final hours of Christmas Eve. Gifts and batteries are strewn around the room in need of cleaning up and mischief awaits once the elf is caught. With the clock ticking to midnight, using the train set to move around the room will require you to set the fastest path with points and switches to get to the places you need to save Christmas.”
As is the case with other Train Sim World 3 content, you’ll be able to import any other locos you have into the festive atmosphere, so you’ll be able to run a classic steam engine in the living room if you so desire. At just £7.99/$9.99 it’s considerably cheaper than other add-ons, and should provide a welcome change of pace over the Christmas holidays.
