Former Movie Producer Harvey Weinstein Hospitalized in New York

Former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, aged 72, was hospitalized on Saturday, April 27, upon his return to New York after the city’s appeals court overturned his 2020 conviction for rape and sexual assault. His attorney, Arthur L. Aidala, informed AFP that the New York Department of Corrections deemed Weinstein in need of immediate medical attention. “A myriad of tests are being conducted on Harvey, and he is being kept under observation,” Aidala added. According to reports from the American media, police stated that Weinstein was transported to Bellevue Hospital in New York City.

Legal Decision Sparks Controversy

The city‘s appeals court ruled that the trial judge had made an error in allowing testimony regarding incidents other than those directly related to the charges against Weinstein’s accusers, thus ordering a new trial. “Procedural rules are of paramount importance; they safeguard you as a citizen and must be adhered to,” emphasized Martine Bouccara, a lawyer admitted to the bars of Paris and New York, speaking on franceinfo on Thursday, April 25.

This judicial decision has sparked outrage within the #MeToo movement, even as Weinstein remains incarcerated for a separate 16-year sentence for rape in California.
