Everton star Conor Coady delivers honest verdict on Leeds United and Elland Road

Conor Coady has told BT Sport – as per BBC Live’s coverage of Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw between Leeds and Everton – that the atmosphere at Elland Road is “always fantastic” before defending his side’s defensive approach to the game.

The two sides have become rivals in recent months. Having been in the midst of a relegation dogfight last season, the installment of Frank Lampard has also heightened the hostility. It comes after Lampard managed Derby County.

Play-offs, spygate, Lampard’s criticism of Marcelo Bielsa – and more – has made him an enemy of the Leeds crowd. But it was his Everton side that opened the scoring on Tuesday night, Anthony Gordon slipping one under Illan Meslier.

Leeds pegged the Toffees back in the second 45 – Luis Sinisterra opening his account in the Premier League. Leeds dominated much of the second half, but Everton clung on to a 1-1 draw. Coady was complimentary of Elland Road.

“It is always tough at Elland Road. You are facing the crowd too. The atmosphere is always fantastic and we knew we had to match that. They gave us some stick for what we were doing but you have to manage the game.”

Coady says Leeds atmosphere is ‘always fantastic’

Leeds fans might have been forgiven for being somewhat downtrodden going into this season. The loss of legend Bielsa, and the club’s worryingly late survival from the drop. But the Leeds fans have really taken to Jesse Marsch.

The American gaffer has now guided his Leeds side to eight points from their first five games. Picking up wins over Wolves and Chelsea, Leeds have also drawn with Everton and Southampton – losing to Brighton on the weekend.

Marsch’s new signings, his enthusiasm and his identity are becoming more and more clear. His aggression on the touchline certainly embodies what Leeds fans want from their manager. Coady is right, in terms of the atmosphere.
