David Moyes has offered an intriguing response to reports suggesting Craig Dawson may be keen to leave West Ham United for Wolves or Aston Villa, telling Football London that the Premier League veteran finds himself in a ‘complicated situation’.
If Steven Gerrard wants a reliable, experienced central defender to apply a coat of thick cement to a crumbling defensive wall, then 32-year-old Dawson could be an inspired addition in the final few hours of the transfer window.
According to the Daily Mail, Gerrard is hoping to lure the former Watford giant to Villa Park. Wolverhampton Wanderers are also in the race. And Sky Sports believe Dawson, who spent nearly a decade at West Brom, would welcome a return to the Midlands in order to be closer to his family.
Aston Villa and Wolves can, for obvious reasons, tick that particular box.
Is Craig Dawson leaving West Ham United?
“Well, he’s had an injury for the best part of four or five weeks,” Moyes said when discussing Dawson’s future ahead of West Ham’s London derby with Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.
“He is back training now.
“Ideally, we wouldn’t (sell him). But it’s probably a much more complicated situation. It is an ongoing thing at the moment, and we’ll just have to see how it goes.”
Dawson has been one of the most consistent performers in two largely excellent campaigns at West Ham. He may, however, find first-team opportunities harder to come by at the London Stadium this term. Especially after the arrivals of Thilo Kehrer and Nayef Aguerd from PSG and Rennes respectively.
Aston Villa, having lost Diego Carlos to a long-term injury, are also looking at Southampton’s Jan Bednarek. Dawson, however, would represent a far more convincing addition, albeit a rather short-term one. Bednarek, after all, has made his fair share of mistakes during the last couple of years.
PSG’s Abdou Diallo is another option, although he is now expected to stay at the Parc des Princes.
