Opinion: Weigl to Monchengladbach could mean Kone is now free to join Liverpool
According to Sky SportsBorussia Monchengladbach sensation Manu Kone is an option for Liverpool ahead of the deadline on Thursday.
The France Under-21 international is one of three options being considered by Jürgen Klopp along with Konrad Laimer and Moises Caicedo.
Now, an interesting development involving Benfica could suggest Kone is on his way to Anfield.
What’s the story?
Well, the 21-year-old has shone in a defensive midfield position for the Bundesliga side since the start of last season.
However, Borussia Monchengladbach are about to bring a new No.6 to the Borussia-Park in Julian Weigl.
Record – one of Portugal’s biggest news outlets – believe the German maestro is on his way back to the Bundesliga to join Borussia Monchengladbach on loan with a €15m (£13m) purchase option, in what is a very intriguing development as we approach the deadline.
Of course, that doesn’t exactly confirm that Liverpool are about to sign Kone, although the timing of the Weigl deal, shortly after the Reds expressed interest in the Frenchman, is certainly interesting.
Manu Kone seems ideal for Liverpool
In our view, this is the player Klopp and Julian Ward – Director of Football at Anfield – should be urging John Henry to get the checkbook out ahead of Thursday’s deadline.
As you can see from the footage below, Kone is a sharp midfielder who is always looking for a progressive pass forward to ignite an attack, while he also appears to possess bundles of energy which should help him fit into Liverpool’s pressing style.
On the topic of progressive passes, no player in the Bundesliga has completed more line-breaking passes than the Colombes-born maestro so far this season, which is mightily impressive.
Kone is even outdoing Bayern Munich playmaker Joshua Kimmich – one of the best in the business – in that specific area.
Keep an eye on this situation – with Weigl returning to Germany, who knows what that could mean for Kone.
