Samarkand. The 22nd Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Regional Summit is held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. But on the sidelines of the SCO summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Uzbekistan on Thursday. During the meeting, Putin thanked Jinping for China’s balanced approach to the Ukraine crisis and criticized US policy.

According to a report by the AP news agency, at the start of talks with the Chinese president in Uzbekistan, Putin said he was ready to discuss China’s concerns over Ukraine. Putin also mentioned China’s concerns. Beijing is worried about the impact of oil price volatility and economic uncertainty caused by the war in Ukraine.

The pair are known to have met on the sidelines of the eight-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which includes India, Pakistan and four former Soviet countries in Central Asia. A Chinese government statement released after the meeting did not specifically mention Ukraine. But Jinping reportedly pledged strong support for Russia’s “core interests”.

However, no specific details were given in the statement. Beijing uses “fundamental interests” to describe issues such as national sovereignty and the Communist Party’s claim to power in Taiwan, over which it is prepared to go to war.

During the meeting, Putin said that we greatly appreciate the balanced approach of our Chinese friends regarding the Ukrainian crisis. He further stated that we understand your questions and concerns in this regard, and we will certainly develop our position on this matter during today’s meeting.
