America took strong action against the ‘Wagner’ group that rebelled from Russia
Washington. The United States imposed sanctions on four companies and one individual linked to the private military group “Wagner”. This step was taken after the rebellion against Russia under the leadership of Evgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the “Wagner” group. Prigozhin ordered his fighters to march towards Moscow (Russia’s capital) last weekend. However, Prigozhin suddenly made a deal with Russia and announced that he would back down and go to Belarus.
Sanctions imposed on Tuesday by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) target entities in the Central African Republic, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Russia linked to the “Wagner” group and its founder Yevgeny Prigozhin. For.
However, the sanctions are not directly linked to last week’s rebellion. The United States has also imposed sanctions on Prigozhin and the “Wagner” group several times in the past. The group is also accused of trying to intervene in the 2016 US election.
Sanctions were imposed on two mining companies ‘Dimeville SAU’ and ‘Midas Resources SARLU’ based in the Central African Republic linked to Prigozhin. In addition, restrictions have also been imposed on Russia-based Limited Liability Company DM regarding gold sales and Dubai-based Industrial Resources General Trading, which provides assistance to Dimeville.
The United States also imposed sanctions on Andrei Ivanov, a Russian official of the “Wagner” group. According to the Ministry of Finance, Ivanov worked closely with Malian government officials to carry out arms deals, mining projects and other activities of the “Wagner” group in Mali.
The ministry said the banned companies conduct illegal gold transactions to provide funds to the “Wagner” group so that the group can maintain and develop its armed forces in Ukraine and Africa.
Meanwhile, several other U.S. government agencies issued multiple advisories on Tuesday regarding gold trading in sub-Saharan Africa. Russian authorities on Tuesday announced the dropping of armed rebellion charges against Prigozhin and the “Wagner” group and the closure of the criminal investigation.
