Kyiv:US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken on Thursday paid an unannounced visit to Kyiv and other European countries facing challenges from Ukraine and Russia and announced two billion dollars in new military aid.
Blinken said in a meeting with senior Ukrainian officials that the Biden administration would provide $2 billion in long-term foreign military funding to Ukraine and its 18 neighbors who are “at the highest potential risk of future Russian aggression”. These neighboring countries of Ukraine also include NATO member states and regional security partners.
This is on top of the additional $675 million military aid package announced for Ukraine only on Thursday by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin at a conference in Germany. This set includes howitzers, artillery armament, military vehicles, armored ambulances, anti-tank systems and other weapons and equipment.
Austin said “the war is in another critical phase” and Ukrainian forces have launched counterattacks in the south of the country. He said that “we now see the clear success of our joint efforts on the battlefield”.
The Ukraine Defense Liaison Group meeting brought together NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Ukraine’s Defense Minister and officials from Allied countries.
