Stockholm. The XBB.1.5 subvariant of Covid-19 Omicron is the fastest spreading variant among all the variants of this virus found so far. More than a quarter of corona virus patients in America have been found to be infected with this subvariant and within months it could become the most prevalent strain in Europe. The European Union’s European Diseases Agency said so on Friday.

Note that patients of the XBB.1.5 subvariant have been found in 38 countries around the world. The World Health Organization said in a rapid risk assessment on Wednesday that of the total number of patients infected with the XBB.1.5 subvariant, 82% are in the United States, 8% in Britain and 2 % in Denmark.

According to virologists, this new subvariant is very similar to its predecessor, XBB.1, but has an additional mutation in its spike protein – which further increases its infectivity.
