Santiago, Chile). For the first time, remains of dinosaur species have been discovered in southern Chile, near the Argentinian border. Researchers said Wednesday that scientists had found the remains of four dinosaur species, including Megaraptor, in an inaccessible canyon in Chilean Patagonia. Which have become an important fossil deposit over the past decade.
According to the report, these fossils were found at Cerro Guido in the Las Chinas Valley in southern Chile, near the Argentinian border. While in 2021 he was taken to a laboratory. Researchers say they belong to dinosaurs that had never before been identified in the area.
Marcelo Leppe, director of the Chilean Antarctic Institute (Inach), who was part of the research team, says that we have become accustomed to finding new fossil remains. It’s always very exciting from a scientific point of view. It has never been discovered or described before in the Las Chinas Valley. The Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH) collaborated with the University of Chile and the University of Texas in this expedition.
Leppe says that during this search he had identified the remains. This includes teeth and post-cranial bone fragments. The remains of four species of dinosaurs have been discovered, including Megaraptor, which belongs to the theropod family.
According to research, these carnivorous dinosaurs included raptor claws, small teeth for tearing, and large upper limbs. They lived at the end of the Cretaceous, that is to say between 66 and 75 million years ago.
Jared Amudeo, a researcher at the University of Chile, told the APF news agency that many facts have proven very useful in identifying these remains. The first of them was related to megatorids. The first reason to identify with great confidence is that the teeth are very curved backwards. This allows us to identify them with certainty.
Amudeo says that two specimens of Unenalaginae, closely related to Velociraptor, have also been identified as having new evolutionary traits. This character would indicate that it is a new species or perhaps a representative of a different clade.
Apart from this, dinosaur remains were also found, in which the remains of two species of birds were also found. These include a group of Enantiornithe and Ornithurinae from the Mesozoic. The Enantiornithe group was considered the most diverse and abundant group of birds. At the same time, the Ornithurine bird group was said to be directly related to the current birds.
