Emergency service officials in Turkey put the initial death toll at 76. But so far, 604 people have been confirmed dead. The disaster razed dozens of buildings in major cities. Relief and rescue operations continue
At least 50 people have died in government-controlled areas of Syria as well as northern areas held by pro-Turkish groups, according to state media and a local hospital. Television showed Turks standing in their pajamas in the snow watching rescuers dig through the rubble of damaged homes.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 4:17 a.m. local time at a depth of about 17.9 kilometers (11 mi). After which 15 minutes aftershock of magnitude 6.7 occurred. AFAD’s emergency services center in Turkey first reported the quake with a magnitude of 7.4, and said it had been followed by dozens of aftershocks. In which many people died. At present, relief and rescue operations are underway at the disaster sites.
