A bloody fight broke out between inmates in an Ecuadorian prison on Monday
The death toll rose to 16 on Tuesday
Officials say one of the dead was also the leader of an alleged drug trafficking gang.

Quito. The death toll in Monday’s bloody battle between prisoners at an Ecuadorian prison has risen to 16. Officials say one of the dead was the owner of an alleged drug gang who tried to escape the accusations by spreading false rumors about his death during the pandemic in Peru. Meanwhile, the number of injured in the clash between prisoners armed with guns and knives at Latakunga prison rose to 43, two of whom are in critical condition. The fighting began on Monday and continued until the early hours of Tuesday.

According to the AP news agency, the owner of the drug gang has been identified as Leonardo Norrero, alias “El Patreon”. Authorities have confirmed the death of Leonardo Norrero, but according to the rules, details of his death can only be given to his family. Norrero, 35, was arrested in late May during a raid in a special area of Guayaquil, during which officers seized 42 gold bars, weapons, jewelry and around $7 million in cash. He said he owned at least seven companies and luxury real estate and other properties.

He was being held in a prison in Latakunga, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of the capital Quito, while on trial for drug trafficking and money laundering. Norrero was also wanted in Peru for drug trafficking. Officials say he spread false rumors about his death in mid-2020 to avoid allegations during the corona virus outbreak. His lawyers had produced a fake death certificate and allegedly produced photographs of his death.

Dozens of soldiers were deployed to the Ecuadorian prison on Tuesday afternoon, increasing security in the prison. Along with this, the administrative staff was removed from the prison premises. Ecuadorian state prisons have seen several bloody conflicts between rival groups of prisoners in recent years. The prison official said 316 inmates were killed by other inmates last year. Meanwhile, 106 people have died so far this year. The worst fighting took place in September 2021 at Littoral Penitentiary in Guayaquil, when 125 prisoners were killed. Two months later, 65 people died in a fight in the same prison.
