Case filed against Meta Corporation for hate speech against Rohingya Muslims
Facebook algorithms increase violence, Amnesty International says
Three lawsuits have been filed against Facebook by Rohingya representatives

Washington, Amnesty International said in a report on Thursday that the company Meta should be heavily compensated for hate speech against Rohingya Muslims broadcast on the Facebook social media platform. According to an AFP report, people are often seen spitting venom on the Facebook social media platform against Rohingya expelled from their country of Myanmar. The organization claims that despite this, Facebook is taking no action to stop them.

Furthermore, the organization’s report claimed that the violence propagated against them was exacerbated by Facebook’s algorithms. This includes the massive sharing of inflammatory videos and posts against the Rohingya on Facebook. Amnesty further said in its report that several Rohingyas had tried to report anti-Rohingya content through Facebook’s “Report” feature, but to no avail. The video then spread to Myanmar, sparking violence against them.

The report noted the disclosure of the Facebook Papers whistleblower in October 2021, saying company executives knew the social media site was promoting the spread of toxic content against minorities and other groups. Three lawsuits have been filed against Facebook by Rohingya representatives in the US and UK.

12,27,000 crore demand
In a lawsuit filed against Facebook in California, US, last December, Rohingya refugees are seeking $150 billion (about Rs 12.27,000 crore) in damages. However, Facebook said it has hired several companies to obtain information about these posts on its platform, which helps identify and remove fake posts.
