Dubai. At least 16 people have been killed and nine others injured in a fire that broke out in a residential building in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Among the dead, 4 Indian citizens are reported. They have been identified as Rijesh, 38, and his wife Jishi, 32, residents of Vengara, Malappuram, Kerala, Abdul Kadar and Saliyakund, residents of Tamil Nadu.
The government-affiliated newspaper ‘The National’ quoted the Dubai Civil Defence’s statement provided by the Dubai Media Office as saying 16 people were killed and nine people were injured in the incident. He said the fire broke out in Dubai’s Al Ras district on Saturday. Here takes place the Dubai Spice Market, which is a major tourist center near the Dubai Creek.
Besides 4 Indians, 3 Pakistanis are also implicated.
The newspaper quotes Naseer Vatanapalli, an Indian social worker present at the Dubai police morgue, as saying that four Indians, including a couple from Kerala, have been identified among the victims. Vatanapalli said: “So far we have been able to identify 4 Indians including a couple from Kerala and two men from Tamil Nadu who were working in the building. Apart from this, 3 Pakistani youths and a Nigerian woman also died.
The government statement gave no reason for the fire, but said a problem in the five-storey apartment led to the fire. Authorities sealed the building for security reasons. For this reason, all the families who survived the fire also became homeless overnight.
Khaleej Times quoted an eyewitness as saying, “We first saw fire coming out of an air conditioner. A few minutes later, the sound of an explosion is heard… Then the fire spreads in no time and we see the plume of smoke rising.
A Dubai Civil Defense spokesperson said preliminary investigations showed the building lacked adequate security requirements. At present, authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to provide a detailed report on the cause of the fire. (with language input)
