Chandīgarh. Indian-born Manpreet Monika Singh was sworn in as a Harris County judge on Sunday. She became the first female Sikh judge in America. Monica Singh was born and raised in Houston and now lives in Blair with her husband and two children. There are approximately 500,000 Sikhs in the United States, 20,000 of whom live in the Houston area. Monika says her election as a judge means a lot to the Sikh community.

The family came to America in the 70s

She says that at that time my father was discriminated against as a Sikh wearing a turban and at that time there was no platform for immigrants to raise their voices against discrimination as well . Monica says times have changed now. My brother was also bullied at school, but now everyone knows we can raise our voices. Although it (the discrimination) is not really over yet, we all still go through some level of discrimination. She says that as an activist, I have always tried to find a solution and bring about a change.


Manpreet is the ambassador for women of all colors

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said it was a proud day for the Sikh community, but also a proud day for people of all colors, who see the diversity of the city of Houston in the diversity of the courtyard. Manpreet is not only an ambassador for Sikhs, but she is also an ambassador for women of all colors.
