Washington: These days, there is a stir in the health agency in America. The reason for this is the occurrence of 5 cases of malaria in the last two months. The main US health agency has issued a warning to public health officials about the emergence of locally reported cases of malaria. According to US media, this is the first case of a local malaria epidemic in America in the past two decades. US health officials have expressed concern over recent reports of locally reported malaria cases in Texas and Florida.

Suspicion of malaria parasite inside the country
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), such conditions have not been seen in Palm Beach County, Florida since 2003. This is very concerning as it indicates that mosquitoes are spreading the malaria parasite to America. Previously, malaria cases in the country were usually associated with people who had traveled to countries where malaria epidemics still exist. Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, there were approximately 2,000 cases of malaria in the United States each year, mostly travel-related.

Most malaria cases in Africa
Globally, millions of malaria-related cases are reported each year, 95% of them in Africa. However, due to the climate crisis and rising temperatures, experts have warned that malaria could become common in America in times to come.

Surveillance is underway in Florida
Now, public health officials in Florida are monitoring the affected areas. Along with this, they are also engaged in identifying the source of additional cases. Along with this, efforts are being made to control the mosquito population. At the same time, US officials are also monitoring the situation in the state of Texas and also paying attention to the mosquito population locally. Given the recent cases, the CDC reassured that the risk of malaria in the United States is extremely low. Although it is summer and travel season, in such a situation, more cases from outside may arise.
