Horrific Australian road crash leaves 10 dead, 11 injured as bus overturns in Hunter Valley

Canberra: At least 10 people were killed when a bus carrying wedding guests overturned on the road in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, late Sunday evening, while 11 others were taken to hospital. Emergency services were working overnight at the crash site on Wine Country Drive, near the Hunter Freeway exit ramp in Greta.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, police said in a statement that initial inquiries revealed that 10 people died in the incident and 11 people were taken to hospital by helicopter and by road. Other than that, 18 passengers were rescued to safety. Police said paramedics were called to the scene shortly after 11:30 p.m. local time following reports of the bus overturning. A large-scale emergency operation was carried out, closing Wine Country Drive in both directions between the New England Highway and the Bridge Street roundabout in Huntly.

According to reports, the bus driver was taken to hospital under police protection for mandatory testing and evaluation. The injured victims were transported by road and air to several hospitals in the Hunter Valley, including John Hunter Hospital in New Lambton Heights and Mater Hospital in Waratah.
