Indian-American actress and producer Mindy Kaling and several others were honored with the prestigious National Medal for inspiring a new generation of storytellers by US President Joe Biden during a ceremony at the White House of the Arts-2021′ ( National Medal of Arts-2021). Indian-American Vera Mindy Chockalingam is known as Mindy Kalinga.

The National Medal of the Arts is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on artists, patrons and arts groups, exemplary individuals and organizations who have advanced the arts in America and inspired others through their distinguished achievements.

Mindy is the first black woman to do a primetime sitcom
Presenting the medal to the actress, Biden said Kaling was the first black woman to create, write and star in a “primetime sitcom.” First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband were present at the awards ceremony. She added that the 43-year-old actress is empowering the next generation by telling her stories with candor and honesty.

The US President said: “The daughters of Indian immigrants, we know them, don’t we? Our vice-president is (also) the daughter of an Indian expatriate. His mother (that of the vice-president) was a great scientist.”

Besides Mindy, Judith Francisca Baca, Fred Eichner, Jose Feliciano, Gladys Knight, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Antonio Martorell-Cardona, Joan Shigekawa, Bruce Springsteen, Vera Wang, the Billie Holiday Theater and the International Association of Blacks in Dance have a received the medals of the National Medal of Arts.

And the list of 2021 “National Humanities Medal” winners includes Richard Blanco, Johannetta Betsch Cole, Walter Isaacson, Earl Lewis, Henrietta Mann, Ann Patchett, Brian Stevenson, Amy Tan, Tara Westover, Colson Whitehead and Native America Calling .
