Wagner helped Russia capture Crimea in 2014, battle Islamic State militants in Syria, conduct operations in the Central African Republic and Mali, and earlier this year took the Ukrainian town of Bakhmut to Russia with heavy losses on both sides. Furthermore, Wagner insisted that his actions on June 23 and 24 were only aimed at settling scores with top military officers, who he believed were losing the Ukraine war to Russia. Prigozhin had said he was not challenging Putin or the Russian state.
