Mikhail Mzintsev has been dubbed the “Butcher of Mariupol” due to his brutal tactics during the Ukrainian War. News of General Mizintsev’s ouster was posted on Telegram by Alexander Sladkov, a correspondent for the Russian state newspaper Izvestia.

No reason was given for terminating 60-year-old Mizintsev’s service as deputy defense minister, Izvestia reported. Mizintsev besieged the Ukrainian city of Mariupol in the early months of the war last year. In September, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense in charge of Logistics and Supply. Imposing sanctions on Mizintsev last June, the European Union branded him the butcher of Mariupol and said he was responsible for the inhuman siege of the shattered Ukrainian city, which Russia says is rebuilding.
