Moscow, Russia’s main counterterrorism agency said on Monday that the bombing responsible for the death of a prominent Russian military blogger was planned by Ukrainian security agencies. Russian officials said Vladlen Tatarsky, 40, was killed on Sunday while leading a discussion in a cafe on the banks of the Neva.

Officials said more than 30 people were injured in the blast and 10 of them are in critical condition. The National Anti-Terrorism Committee said the attack on Tatarsky was planned by “Ukrainian special services”.

According to reports in Russian media, this bomb was hidden inside Tatarsky’s bust. This statue was presented to the military blogger by a woman just before the explosion. Russia’s main criminal investigation agency, the “Russian Investigative Commission”, said Darya Tryapova had been arrested on suspicion of involvement in Tatarsky’s murder. Tryapova, 26, is a resident of St. Petersburg and had previously been arrested for participating in an anti-war rally.

The organizers of the event, a Russian patriotic group, said they had made security arrangements but these proved to be “inadequate”. In a video, witness Alisa Smotrova said the woman, who identified herself as Nastya, asked Tatarsky questions during the discussion and said she had brought her bust to him but security personnel l kicked out because it could be a bomb. At this, Nastya and Tatarsky laughed. Then the woman went to the door and brought the bust and gave it to Tatarsky. He placed the bust on a nearby table after which the explosion took place. Russian media said investigators believed the bust was the cause of the explosion, but did not rule out the possibility that a bomb was planted in the cafe before the event. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
